Both Manchester Clubs Defeated in First Round of Group Games

So it's happened again. Manchester city have started yet another Champions League campaign in less than impressive fashion. Slight solace for their fans may come via the fact that Manchester United didn't fare any better. Overall, there were few surprises across the board, the only real shocks coming in the defeats to both Manchester sides.

City lost 2-1 to Juventus in what was a tight affair. Considering the two club's form heading into the game Manuel Pellegrini will be incredibly disappointed his side did not win after taking the lead. A Giorgio Chiellini own goal opened the scoring but goals from Mario Mandzukic and Alvaro Morata saw the Italian side run out as 2-1 winners.

Things were even worse for Manchester United however, who went down 2-1 to PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands. To make matters worse Luke Shaw suffered a broken leg following a nasty challenge from Hector Moreno and will be out for several months.
Meanwhile, in Group A Real Madrid served up an expected 4-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk after the Ukrainian side saw Taras Stepanenko sent off for two bookable offences. Cristiano Ronaldo netted a hat-trick, though it was not all good news for the Spanish side as Gareth Bale limped off with a calf injury.
PSG also got off the mark with a win over Swedish outfit Malmo FF thanks to goals from Angel Di Maria and Edinson Cavani.

Wolfsburg overcame CSKA Moscow in Manchester United's group thanks to a goal from Julian Draxler, while last season's Europa League winners Sevilla overcame Borussia Monchengladbach in the other game in City's Group D.

In Group C Atletico Madrid beat Turkish side Galatasray 2-0 thanks to two early strikes from Antoine Griezmann, while Benfica beat minnows FC Astana in what was the first ever outing for a Kazakh club in the Champions League.
